Recollection, familiarity and memory strength: confusion about confounds.

resolves into an enduring feeling of contentment. Contentment from writing a song is a pretty good reward. But playing the song for band mates, and turning it into something that we perform, and then getting positive feedback from an audience is sublime. I sometimes get asked how I find time to make music. I always answer the same way. I’m a better scientist, husband, father (and every other role I perform) because I find the time to make music. So whether you are just a couple of guys or gals with guitars, or in a full band that

متن کاملMedial temporal lobe function and recognition memory: a novel approach to separating the contribution of recollection and familiarity.
Human neuroimaging studies of recognition memory have often been interpreted to mean that the hippocampus supports recollection but not familiarity. This interpretation is complicated by the fact that recollection-based decisions are typically associated with stronger memories than familiarity-based decisions. Some studies of source memory controlled for this difference in memory strength and f...
متن کاملRecognition memory ROCs for item and associative information: the contribution of recollection and familiarity.
Receiver-operating characteristics (ROCs) were examined in three recognition memory experiments. ROCs for item information (i.e., was this word presented?) were found to be curvilinear. However, ROCs for associative information (i.e., were these two words presented together?) were found to be linear. The results are in agreement with the predictions of a dual-process model that assumes that rec...
متن کاملSeparating the brain regions involved in recollection and familiarity in recognition memory.
The neural substrates of recognition memory retrieval were examined in a functional magnetic resonance imaging study designed to separate activity related to recollection from that related to continuous variations in familiarity. Across a variety of brain regions, the neural signature of recollection was found to be distinct from familiarity, demonstrating that recollection cannot be attributed...
متن کاملRecollection and familiarity make independent contributions to memory judgments.
Recognition memory can be supported by the processes of recollection and familiarity. Recollection is recovery of qualitative information about a prior event. Familiarity is a scalar strength signal that permits judgments of prior occurrence. There is vigorous debate about how these processes are conceptualized, how they contribute to memory judgments, and which brain regions support them. One ...
